What is Geolocation?

Geolocation is the identification of the real-world geographic location of a user. For internet attached devices this is usually derived from the IP address of the device. On the Internet, service providers are free to try and determine the geolocation of an IP address themselves, but the usual mechanism is to implement RFC2167, or to buy this service from another provider. See https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2167 for more technical details.

How is geolocation  used?

Some license holders for digital services and content restrict access to specific geographic regions. For example Sky Sports restricting Premier Division football to UK viewers.

What is my location?

SoldierNET sites are all listed as being in the UK compliant with RFC2167. See the following results https://whois.domaintools.com/185.72.172.48.

Why is this relevant?

Some content providers do not properly implement all of RFC2167 and as a result incorrectly assume that certain SoldierNET sites are outside the UK. This can result in content providers refusing to provide content that has geographic license restrictions. If you are affected by this then you should contact the content provider and refer them to the location data provided above and ask them to correct their location software and/or database accordingly.
